While tens of thousands of Taylor Swift fans flooded Vancouver’s BC Place for the final shows of the record-breaking Eras Tour this weekend, Harjit Sajjan, Canada’s Minister for the Pacific Economic Development Agency, found himself in the spotlight for a different reason.
Minister Sajjan Declines Concert Tickets Amid Controversy
Before the final stop of the Eras Tour, Sajjan came under fire after it was revealed he accepted taxpayer-funded tickets to attend the concert. The Vancouver South MP was initially slated to attend with his daughter, but as the controversy grew, an emailed statement from his office clarified his decision.
“After reviewing the circumstances and reflecting on the conversations about the offer of tickets to the Eras Tour, Minister Sajjan declined the tickets on Friday and did not attend the show,” the statement confirmed.
PavCo’s Offer to Stakeholders
PavCo, the organization responsible for BC Place, stated that it routinely offers tickets to stakeholders, including elected officials, as part of its normal business operations. Sajjan was the only politician who accepted the offer. His office mentioned that he had received clearance from the federal ethics commissioner before accepting the tickets and that he was asked to make a donation to the local food bank in exchange.
